Know Thy “The Devil” In Tarot

The Devil Card is the fifteenth card in Major Arcana Deck and is associated with Capricorn. It depicts Baphomet, the figure of half-man, half-goat. While in current times, this figure has been intrinsically linked to the occult and evil, its original purpose was to represent the balance between good and evil, human and animal. The tails of humans in this card take the form of grapes and fire and showcase these animalistic desires and tendencies one is born with, such as pleasure and lust.

Dance With Desire

This is important to the meaning of the card itself where our balance between parts of ourselves comes to light. In this card, we find the man and woman both chained to Baphomet’s podium. The man and woman both have horns that have grown in their time trapped. important to notice that these chains are loose enough to look like they could be easily removed which is a reminder of one’s own free will to be trapped in a situation.

This dynamic is meant to show that we might feel chained to our desires or trapped in a situation but the truth is, we know inherently inside ourselves how to free ourselves and take back complete control of our life. The card reminds us that to reach the best versions of ourselves, we have to let go of anything in our way whether that be our negative thinking patterns, lifestyle, or addictions.

Know Thy Shadow

In addition to this, it asks first to acknowledge our shadow side, our desire, for us to take our power back. It asks us to recognize the impact of following these lower needs and desires into our conscious awareness to use them as a driving force to change for the better.

At the same time, the card also encourages an exploration of your deepest desires and fantasies through your sexuality. Sometimes the card depicts a relationship where two individuals feel strongly tied to each other and could become dark or co-dependent on each other if not careful.
